Craig Kanarick is best known for co-founding Razorfish in 1994 where he spent 7 years as Chairman and Chief Strategic Officer, growing the pioneering digital firm from two people to more than 2300 employees in nine countries. He has also started five other businesses and consulted for numerous companies like Blockbuster, Apple, and Samsung. Mouth was founded in 2012 to help feed the hunger of indie food lovers and nurture the growth of indie food companies. Craig has been a FoundersCard Member since 2014.

What was your first entrepreneurial venture?

First? Mowing lawns as a kid! But I wasn’t very good at it, so it didn’t really take off.

My first successful venture was Razorfish, which I co-founded back in 1994.

 

What is the best piece of advice you received when beginning your first business?

The best advice was easily to keep taking the risk, even when it seems like your back is against the wall. Trust your gut and make sure to do a great job at everything, even the small things.

Mouth is all about ‘Indie Foods.’ What is an Indie Food?

Think of indie music and indie film.  Our products, like your favorite small bands or films, offer an alternative experience to the big and mass produced. Indie food is not only delicious, but must be created from start to finish with a high level of personal attention, craft and passion. Indie means food made by people not companies. So, we carry things like pickles, beef jerky, jam, candy bars, popcorn, snacks, spreads, craft spirits and so much more.

What makes the products at Mouth different?

Many of them are new to the market, so we’re a great place for discovery. What you know, when you shop at Mouth, is that all of our products are delicious, mouth-watering and made in the United States by risk-taking makers all with a high level of passion and craft.

Discovering new innovative foods sounds like a dream! How have your travels influenced which products Mouth offers?

As far back as I can remember, I liked adventure so I have always had a thing for different or exotic foods. Traveling the world, however, just gave me a wider palette to explore those desires and exposed me to a huge range of flavors. I have developed a taste for foreign spices, which is why we carry products like za’atar crackers, indian curry popcorn, pickled bamboo, chocolate halva spread and szechuan peppercorn-spiced peanut butter.

What snack is your guilty pleasure?

I never feel guilty about snacking but these days you can find me eating just a lot of Paso Almond Brittle.

Aside from your company/job, what is your greatest success?

My 13 years of marriage to the amazing Rebecca Odes and two kids, both of whom are shockingly adventurous eaters.

What is one book you would recommend to everyone?

The Art of Travel by Alain de Botton

We’re constantly re-evaluating, improving and evolving Mouth. Right now, we’re super excited about our new spirits and wine collection! It’s been really great to be able to offer awesome liquor subscriptions like Bourbon Every Month, Gin Every Month and Whiskey Every Month and add them to the rest of our successful monthly subscription clubs.  We’re cooking up some mind-blowing new product combos and branching out into new categories, which we’ll be launching early next year.
