Airport Meals That Are Worth The Layover

There was a time that the thought of “airport food” consisted of a bag of chips and a candy bar while sitting in the waiting areas; and then evolved over the years to include select bars and family eateries that offered a larger variety of foods. However, in the case of airport dining, variety did not necessarily transcend to equal the expected quality of dining. However, we continue to see more options in airports around the world, which offer a more refined dining experience with alternatives that are not only delicious, but also healthier.

When it comes to mouthwatering barbeque, there’s no better place than Austin, Texas. With a rich history of developing the perfect barbeque recipe, The Salt Lick serves thousands of guests each week from their Driftwood and Round Rock locations; and now tempts the many travelers passing through the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport with those intoxicating aromas of true barbeque perfection. A favorite for many travelers needing their barbeque fix is the brisket sandwich and cole slaw, but don’t forget to also consider the hot turkey platter and their sausage options.

The Palm – JFK Airport

Certainly at the forefront of this movement, The Palm opened in 2009. While the menu is designed with the “traveler on the go” in mind, the essence of this treasured steakhouse is still very much alive to create the quintessential Palm experience. Of course, their signature items such as creamed spinach, jumbo lump crab cakes and the Louis Gigi Delmaestro salad are featured on the menu, but a favorite here while on the go is the grilled twin tenderloin filets served “class Oscar style” with jumbo lump crabmeat, asparagus and hollandaise sauce.

Cat Cora’s Kitchen – San Francisco Airport

As the Iron Chef’s empire continues to grow, Chef Cat Cora is determined to find unique locations to provide guests with localized and fresh ingredients. This is food she would happily serve her own family, as the menus are professional chef tested and modern mom approved. Going another step beyond simply using ingredients that are locally-sourced and organic, the locations aim to be green and environmentally friendly by using all eco-friendly and bio-degradable materials for their plates, boxes and utensils. You can never go wrong with the spiced fresh tomato soup and grilled cheese combo; or if you need that final serving of San Francisco seafood, the raw bar or surf slider trio of fried oyster, grilled shrimp and crab cake are always great options. Round out the meal with one of Cat Cora’s specialty wines, or get adventurous with the Pig and the Barrel cocktail of Buffalo Trace bourbon neat with applewood smoked bacon.

It’s at the south end of Terminal 3, next to Thomas Pink and across from Jo Malone that the world of Rhubarb is waiting to welcome guests with an inventive and fresh menu. Simply a sweet treat or light afternoon tea is on the menu, or take time to explore their extensive hamburger menu influenced by their worldwide travels. Their mission is simple – provide affordable and approachable meals that are suitable for the couple on their honeymoon looking to savor a 3-course meal fit for royalty, or simply the family wanting to have a healthy meal on the go with the kids. Beyond just the amazing hamburgers, Day Boat fish & chips and Massaman chicken curry are other dynamic options on this stylish menu, and pairs perfectly with the wines and champagne available. If looking for a refreshing kick, the spicy apple mojito always delivers.
