Getaround Founder & CEO, Jessica Scorpio

Jessica Scorpio co-founded Getaround while attending Singularity University, a graduate program focused on accelerating technology and addressing humanity’s greatest challenges. Getaround aims to disrupt the transportation industry by enabling people to share their car with others nearby, allowing more individuals to live car-free while combatting vehicle overpopulation. Getaround is currently available in San Francisco, Chicago, Austin, Portland and San Diego, and recently released a new iPhone app. Jessica has been a FoundersCard Member since 2010.

1. What inspired you to start Getaround?

Three years ago, while attending Singularity University, we were given a challenge by Larry Page to positively impact one billion people in ten years. After learning that there are one billion cars in the world, and each car sits idle 22 hours each day, we decided to focus on something that affects seemingly everyone across the world: transportation. Instead of adding new cars into the world, we decided to maximize what is already available – and Getaround was born.

2. When launching Getaround, what was the best advice you received?

“Do something you’re passionate about.” We’re deeply committed to making the world a better place and solving car overpopulation. This passion has served us well.

3. What is the one book you recommend to everyone?

The 4 Hour Work Week by Timothy Ferriss.

4. Who is someone we should be following on Twitter right now?

@Shervin! Shervin is one of the most inspirational and intelligent people I have ever met, his Twitter is a great source of daily wisdom.

5. What is the hardest part about your job?

Saying no to great opportunities. We’re doing something really game changing and being focused is key.

6. How many days a month (or year) do you spend traveling?

7-10 days/month

7. Prior to your current success, what was the worst job you ever had?

I’ve learnt a lot from all of my past jobs. From camp counselor, political staffer I’ve enjoyed them all.

8. Aside from your company/job, what is your greatest success?

Prior to Getaround I founded a non-profit startup, IDEAL, that worked to connect young leaders with experts in their field.

9. Whom do you admire?

Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo. She’s a great role model for female founders.

10. Give us your best plug/brag a little about as to what you’re working on now/next?

We just raised a $13.9M series A so we’re going to be launching Getaround in more markets this year. Also, I recently adopted 2 twin dogs, Indy and Whistler whom I’m very proud of!
